Sweet Thunder: SFCMP Festival of Electro-Acoustic Music, April 24-27, 2014 at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco

The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, founded as “Bring your Own Pillow” in 1971 and incorporated as a nonprofit on August 14, 1974,  is dedicated to presenting conceptually provocative and musically compelling works by composers of our time and it nourishes the creation and dissemination of new work through high-quality musical performances, commissions, and community outreach. SFCMP promotes the music of composers from across cultures and stylistic traditions who are creating a vast and vital 21st century musical language. We strive to share these experiences with as many people as possible, both in and outside of traditional concert settings.

We invite your company to join in this celebration and become our partner. By sponsoring SWEET THUNDER, your company will receive exceptional brand exposure among musicians, composers, performers and a diverse and desirable community. Our audience is culturally curious, innovation-minded, creative and adventuresome. Exactly the kind of people you want to reach in ways that will excite and impress with your product and messaging.

Sweet Thunder is a major cultural event for the Bay area this Spring, attracting local audiences and tourists alike. We anticipate that approximately 7,500 festival-goers will enjoy a sonic journey, with iconic works of the past 50 years alongside vital new pieces by important emerging and established composers of new music. Alongside SFCMP, the Bay Area’s “premier new music ensemble,” Sweet Thunder welcomes some of the nation’s leading interpreters of new music to San Francisco for world premieres, improv sessions, solos, large ensemble works, video installations and more.

The electro-acoustic focus of the festival programming showcases ways that technology and electronics have shaped musical and cultural contributions from the mid-20th century to the present day, especially in the United States.

For example, Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was one of the first to experiment with electronics in his music. Morton Subotnick helped invent computer music. Katharina Rosenberger’s sound installation will paint the space that it occupies with electronic music and Matt Ingalls and Pamela Z are heroes of the local Bay Area electro-acoustic scene. A number of the works on the program will incorporate electronics with the acoustic performers who will respond with their instruments.

New music has wide crossover appeal, often due to interests in electronic music, tribal/ethnic, polyrhythmic, trance music, tape loops and other techniques that the pop and underground cultures have adopted from late 20th century maverick composers. There is no better place nor time to experience this in San Francisco as we present a special music festival of major significance that can also bring attention to your company.
