Details

A dazzling display of atmospheric pageantry, ignited by ions of cosmic wind… and one that was recently observed as far south as our own U.S. coastal latitudes. The aurora borealis connects the Northern hemisphere in an environmental dance, and traces filaments of connectivity through space across the vast distance to our own sun. The late Kaija Saariaho’s Lichtbogen (Bows of Light) weds spectral electronics with acoustic means to evoke the naturalistic phenomenon in sound. A concert of works by other composers from Northern climes and with Nordic roots complements the gesture; Jesper Nordin’s Surfaces Scintillantes explores the relationship between surface and depth perception, and Magnus Lindberg’s Jubilees creates a celebration of sound in orchestral terms with an illumination and refraction of a work originally composed for piano. California composer and Swedish emigré Mika Pelo contributes a newly commissioned piece for chamber ensemble, and the entire concert is enhanced by lighting design in an immersive transformation of the Taube Atrium Theater space into a backdrop for shifting colors and light.

Jesper Nordin - Surfaces scintillantes (2007)

Kaija Saariaho - Lichtbogen (1985-86)

Mika Pelo - New Work (2025) - world premiere (SFCMP commission)

Magnus Lindberg - Jubilees (2002)
