Lisa Oman joins San Francisco Contemporary Music Players

On October 6, 2015, Lisa Oman will join San Francisco Contemporary Music Players (SFCMP) as its next executive director. Ms. Oman brings more than 15 years of leadership experience in nonprofit administration and 5 years of experience as Executive Director with a performing arts organization. She comes to SFCMP from her most recent work with the University of California, Santa Cruz where she held the position of Finance Director for the Humanities Department.
A trained trumpet player, Ms. Oman founded and managed as Executive Director, Composers and Schools in Concert, a nonprofit designed to expose and engage high school students in the concepts, techniques and skills underlying contemporary music composition. Ms. Oman is passionate about new music and brings a unique understanding of the value of contemporary music and connection between composers, students and teachers.
Ms. Oman said of her new appointment: “I am thrilled to join the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players – a venerable organization with a history of presenting thoughtful, relevant and forward-thinking programming. I admire the excellent musicians at SFCMP, the artistic programming of Dr. Steven Schick, the work of the contemporary composers, and the long history of the organization. I have a great passion for making contemporary music accessible for the next generation and look forward to building on the great outreach and education programs SFCMP already has in place.”

On October 20, led by Artistic Director Steven Schick, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players launches its 2015/16 45th Concert Season, X-SCAPE–a season dedicated to exploring new spaces, both literal and metaphorical. The season consists of four X-SCAPE concerts and several special events. By replacing “X” the audience is able to look at important spaces: from SongScape, an examination of the nature of utterance and communication; to XeriScape, which begs the question of the role of art in a discussion of climate change; to Oscuroscape, on the nature of darkness. Grisey Preview on Tuesday, Oct. 20 opens the SongScape events at San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), followed by the full SongScape concert on Wednesday, Oct. 21, also at SFCM. Week one of the season culminates on Saturday, Oct. 24, with a special Barriere & Saariaho concert of works for solo instrumentalists with electronics, to be presented at Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, and including on-stage interviews with each of the composers.
Through its annual concert series, collaborative projects, commissions, education and outreach activities, SFCMP’s repertoire crosses cultural and stylistic boundaries. Consisting of a core of some of the Bay Area’s leading musicians and music educators, SFCMP has performed more than 1,200 new works by over 550 composers. Nearly 150 of these have been premieres, and SFCMP has commissioned some 80 new works from composers such as John Adams, Chaya Czernowin, George Lewis, Shulamit Ran, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Olly Wilson, Julia Wolfe, and Zhou Long. SFCMP has been presented by leading cultural festivals and concert series, including San Francisco Performances, Cal Performances, the Other Minds Festival and the Stern Grove Festival, among others.
In addition to programmatic innovation, SFCMP performances are rooted in artistic virtuosity. The 24 core SFCMP are among the Bay Area’s leading musicians and educators. They are active as soloists and chamber musicians and leaders of several dynamic performance groups in California and beyond.
