SAN FRANCISCO (October 3, 2023) – San Francisco Contemporary Music Players will open its 53rd concert season on November 11, 2023 at 8:00 PM at Grace Cathedral with a program entitled “RE:voicing,” which is being presented in association with the statewide California Festival. The program has been constructed around the Bay Area premiere of Raven Chacon’s Voiceless Mass, winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in music. Chacon is the first Native American (Diné) to receive this prestigious award and was recently chosen as a recipient of a 2023 Macarthur Fellowship.
Complementing Chacon’s work will be Messiaen’s Apparition de l’Église Éternelle (1932), Chinary Ung’s Luminous Spirals (1997), and Goerge Crumb’s iconic Ancient Voices of Children (1970). Joining the Contemporary Music Players will be guest artists Christopher Keady, organist and Tonia D’Amelio, soprano. The program will be preceded at 7:00 PM by SFCMP’s popular “How Music is Made” pre-concert discussion, featuring Artistic Director Eric Dudley in conversation with composer Raven Chacon.
