The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players (SFCMP) seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as its next Executive Director. The Executive Director provides organizational leadership that leverages the expertise of the Artistic Director Eric Dudley, the Players (musicians), Board and Advisors, and SFCMP’s communities to serve the organization’s mission. A Creative Advisors program was launched in 2019. Tyshawn Sorey, Caroline Shaw, Pamela Z, and Edward Simon currently serve as the organization’s first Creative Advisors.
The Executive Director performs as the chief executive officer of the organization and guides organizational strategy, fundraising and sales, concert production, and collective bargaining and media agreements. The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board and works closely with the President and Artistic Director.
Celebrating its 50th season in 2020-2021, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players is one of America’s leading contemporary music organizations, known for virtuosic performances that cross cultural and stylistic boundaries. Located in San Francisco, the Contemporary Music Players presents 5-6 concerts and other educational events annually that encourage audience engagement in the concert hall and beyond.
SFCMP’s FY 2022 budget is planned to be $300K and the organization is fortunate to draw upon reserves of $1.5M provided by our visionary Legacy Circle members.
The SF Contemporary Music Players is positioned for growth and has four strategic organizational growth areas upon which the Executive Director is expected to focus:
- Advance the organization’s equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and continue to successfully increase cultural representation within the organization and the ensemble.
- Cultivate digital audiences by growing the organization’s online programming through the production of digital content.
- Develop new revenue model(s) that emphasize audience development through online offerings. Grow audiences and recognition of SFCMP as a leading contemporary music ensemble.
- Cultivate and increase the portfolio of major donors to support the vibrancy of SFCMP’s programs and ensure its legacy.
Job Description Executive Director
- Direct report to the President of SFCMP. Reports to the Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director, oversee part-time staff, 6-8 contractors and facilitate the work of the organization’s 22 core musicians.
- Collaborate with American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local 6 in negotiating and following the SFMCP/AFM Collective Bargaining Agreement and Integrated Media Agreement.
- This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Salary range is $80,000 to $90,000 based on years of experience.
- This position is a remote, work-from-home position that requires weekly staff meetings and the ability to meet regularly with donors and other stakeholders in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- The position requires an ability to work evenings and weekends.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform as the chief executive officer of the organization.
- Envision and encourage innovative ideas that reflect SFCMP’s commitment to increase cultural representation throughout the organization and remove barriers to participation.
- Strategic goal: Advance the organization’s equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives and continue to successfully increase cultural representation within the organization and the ensemble.
- Provide leadership in concert with the Artistic Director and Board to define the strategic plan and long-range goals of the organization.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director to balance resources with artistic goals and ensure that the organization lives within its means.
- Develop diverse sources of income that will sustain the organization and advance the mission and vision.
- Maximize revenue from contributions including grants, annual appeals, major individual gifts, bequests, and planned giving.
- Strategic goal: Cultivate and increase the portfolio of major donors to support the vibrancy of SFCMP’s programs.
- Develop effective marketing and engagement strategies in keeping with best practices that enhance earned income, concert ticket sales, fee concerts, and program fees.
- In coordination with the Board of Directors, maintain and strengthen the organization’s fiscal health.
- Provide accurate and timely financial reporting to the Board of Directors.
- Develop and oversee organization and production budgets that align with strategic goals.
- Analyze financials to develop budgets and forecasts.
- Working with the contracted bookkeeper and accountant, oversee monthly accounting, financial reports, payroll, and other recurring weekly, monthly or annual processing, including AFM reports.
- Maintain official organizational records and documents, assuring compliance with all relevant legal and fiscal practices (federal, state, and local regulations) of a non-profit corporation.
Digital and Live Concert Production
- Oversee the production of concerts and events.
- Oversee vendor contracts including negotiating venue leases and operating fees.
- Ensure presentation of inviting and imaginative concerts and events through engagement of musicians, production staff, contracted employees and in collaboration with Artistic Director.
- Strategic goal: Cultivate digital audiences by growing the organization’s online programming through the production of digital content.
- Ensure quality customer service for concert patrons.
- Represent SFCMP in the new music community creating opportunities for partnerships and ensuring visibility of the organization locally, regionally, and nationally.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director, Board, Artistic Planning Committee and Musicians to align programming with mission, organizational resources, and diversity plan.
- Facilitate positive and effective working relationships. Ensure outstanding communications among all organizational stakeholders.
Marketing and Audience Development
- Develop and implement the SFCMP brand.
- Strategic goal: Develop new revenue model(s) that emphasize audience development through online offerings. Grow audiences and recognition of SFCMP as a leading contemporary music ensemble.
- Develop and implement digital, print, and social media marketing campaigns.
- Develop content for the campaigns in collaboration with the Artistic Director.
- Oversee the engagement of musicians, staff, and temporary employees/contractors.
- Lead and guide relationship with AFM and AFM Local 6 and in collaboration with the Board of Directors, negotiate the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the Integrated Media Agreement (IMA)
Board Governance and Relations
- In collaboration with the Artistic Director, President and Board, provide leadership in advancing the vision and mission of the organization through the development of annual strategic goals and tactical implementation plans.
- Support the President in maintaining Board committees. Serve as ex-officio member on all committees.
- Attend all Board meetings and deliver an Executive Director’s report.
- Assist in the definition of artistic goals and evaluation of annual concerts and education programs.
- Build relationships with communities and act as an SFCMP spokesperson and advocate in promoting the organization and its values.
- Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, business, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- A demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential.
- 7 years of progressive senior management experience including demonstrated success managing a team, expanding earned and contributed revenues, strengthening partnerships, and increasing community engagement.
- 5 years of experience in performing arts production.
- Leading candidates will have strong business and financial acumen and experience with nonprofit governance and development.
- Technical expertise using donor and sales databases, financial management, standard office, marketing and ticketing software, and website and image-editing tools.
- Demonstrated experience in leading digital and print sales or marketing campaigns.
- A love for contemporary music and an established professional network within the field or related fields is welcomed.
- Experience with collective bargaining agreements, licensing, commissioning, and broadcasting agreements is a plus.
- Experience with researching and developing grant projects and managing all aspects of applications, awards, and reporting.
- Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
