Project Title: Professional performance opportunity: New music rehearsal and public performance with SF Contemporary Music Players.
What: A week of rehearsals and a subscription-series concert performance in side-by-side configuration with members of the award-winning San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
Target Demographic: We are seeking up to six (6) student instrumentalists at SFCM for performance on any of the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello and/or Double Bass.

SFCMP is offering a side-by-side winter term performance opportunity which is open to all students at SFCM who play the instruments in the above-mentioned categories. Registration for these opportunities will be on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to approval by SFCMP’s Artistic Director, Eric Dudley.
Join the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Bay Area’s largest and longest-standing contemporary music ensemble, for a week of rehearsals which will culminate in a Friday afternoon dress rehearsal and evening performance on a subscription-series concert. You will rehearse and perform the fascinating and rarely performed masterwork Concert for Piano and Orchestra by John Cage, with SFCMP pianist Kate Campbell as soloist. For an indeterminate number of musicians, and of undefined performance duration, this highly inventive and experimentalist work by Cage gives each performer the freedom to execute their own part with a minimum of constraints in terms of time and performance details. The piece will be performed alongside the Bay Area’s best professional musicians and contemporary music specialists, under the leadership of SFCMP’s Artistic Director, Eric Dudley, and will include a new choreography for solo dancer by Bay Area deaf artist Antoine Hunter, who will join the performance by dancing in the center of the musicians circling around the perimeter of the Hume Hall stage. ABOUT THE CONCERT PROGRAM
On our in the LABORATORY Series we explore large-ensemble contemporary classical works that push the boundaries of the concert experience. This season, we present a program of music that engages with the physicality of gestures, through structural alterations to the sounding body of an instrument, transpositions in the order of musical materials, or works composed for the real-time motion of visual elements and the human form. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of celebrated choreographer Merce Cunningham’s birth, as well as his long and prolific partnership with California composer John Cage, we feature SFCMP’s own Kate Campbell in Cage’s brilliantly unconventional Concert for Piano and Orchestra, a work composed specifically for a Cunningham dance piece. Bay Area deaf artist and dancer Antoine Hunter will join SFCMP and SFCM performers with a riveting original choreography for this work. Works by Bay Area composers Gloria Justen and David Coll explore the resultant sounds from changes to the physical set-up of instruments, through the re-tuning of strings or alterations to the sounding body that produce shifts in registral and timbral properties. Also known for the exploration of alternative instrumental resources and playing techniques, California’s own Henry Cowell figures prominently in the conversation through a piece for string quartet that invites the performers to determine the ordering of its sections, and a multi-media work by British-born composer Anna Clyne rounds out the program with the union of auditory, visual, and dance elements. In keeping with our mission of encouraging and mentoring the next generation of contemporary musicians, San Francisco Conservatory of Music students will join in the performance as part of SFCMP’s education and professional development series.
ABOUT THE SIDE-BY-SIDE EXPERIENCE
Through the rehearsal process, each performer will discover new ways to relate to their instrument, challenging them to listen critically, to rethink their musical habits, and to develop new ways to approach music-making, both as an individual and as an ensemble member.
We hope to encourage enjoyable and thoughtful collaboration between disparate musical disciplines, fostering relationships with the potential to last beyond the concert performance.

Led by Artistic Director Eric Dudley since 2018, SFCMP plays an important role in the regional and national cultural landscape. The most long-standing, continually performing new music ensemble outside the East Coast, SFCMP uses performances, collaborative projects, commissions, and educational outreach activities to give audience members and participants opportunities to discover musical repertoire that is new to them – and to use these experiences as ways to better understand, interact with, and enjoy their lives and our world.
In addition to programmatic innovation, our performances are rooted in artistic virtuosity. Our 24 core musicians are among the Bay Area’s leading performers and educators. They are active as soloists and chamber musicians and leaders of several dynamic performance groups in California and beyond.
Now embarking on our 48th season, SFCMP’s work has greatly contributed to the art form and the new music sector. A recent award winner of the Fromm Foundation Ensemble Prize, a ten-time winner of the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, we have performed more than 1,200 new works by over 600 composers. Over 300 of these have been premieres, and we have commissioned some 80 new works from such composers as John Adams, George Crumb, and Julia Wolfe. SFCMP has been presented by leading cultural festivals and concert series including San Francisco Performances, Los Angeles Monday Evening Concerts, Cal Performances, the Stern Grove Festival, the Festival of New American Music at CSU Sacramento, the Ojai Festival, and France’s prestigious MANCA Festival.
